Dan Gray, Ph.D. 

Founder and principal optical engineer

Dan is an accomplished Principal Optical Engineer with over 10 years of industry experience in medical, life sciences, biometrics, consumer, and industrial markets. He holds a Bachelors, Masters, and Ph.D. from the University of Rochester in Optics, a Six Sigma Black Belt obtained at General Electric, and a APMP Project Management Certificate from the ILX Group in London. He is passionate about applying his background in optical engineering and project management to agile product development in the optics and photonics industry. Dan partners with clients to design and develop their products, solve complex engineering challenges, and transfer them to manufacture.

Ted McHenry


Ted is an experienced opto-mechanical engineer with over 12 years of industry experience in R&D and manufacturing, including 7 years designing precision opto-mechanical systems. He has a diverse market experience including medical, life sciences, and industrial instrumentation. In addition to engineer roles, he owned product data management systems, engineering standards, and quality systems at large and small engineering companies. 

Ted holds Mechanical Engineering degrees  from University of Maine, Orono (B.S.) and Northeastern University (M.S.).


Alexander Kapustin

senior optical engineering CONSULTANT

Alexander is an experienced optical design engineer with more than 8 years in the optics and photonics industry. He holds a B.S., M.S. degree in optical systems and lasers. His extensive expertise in the design and analysis of optical systems covers many different markets and end applications, from consumer electronics to scientific research devices, and he has broad experience with laboratory measurement equipment and the optical design of instruments for mass production. Alexander is passionate about the design process and technical solutions research.

Sherri Emery

Administrative Manager

Sherri came to Gray Optics with a background in medical device marketing, trade show coordination, and sales. Sherri has a passion for business and marketing, and has earned an MBA with a concentration in entrepreneurship. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management from California University of Pennsylvania. While earning both of her degrees, Sherri competed internationally in the sport of skeleton as a member of the United States Bobsled and Skeleton Federation.

Eric Storm

Principal Assembly technician

Eric has over 26 of experience assembling micro-optics for medical and industrial applications. With an eye for detail, and deep technical expertise, Eric creates the most precise micro-optical assemblies. Throughout his career, he has developed capabilities in assembling micro-optics, using precision dispensing equipment, performing active alignment of optical systems, and metrology techniques. Eric excels at building difficult optical systems from the research and development phases, through low volume production builds. As a true outdoors-man, Eric has a passion for hiking and photography.

Jason Karp

Principal Optical Engineer

Jason is an experienced principal optical engineer with over 8 years of industry experience in optical system design for industrial and commercial applications. He holds a bachelor’s degree from University of Miami and master’s and doctorate degrees from University of California, San Diego. Jason has extensive knowledge in geometric ray tracing, non-sequential and stray light analyses and opto-mechanical system design for imaging and sensing applications. He strives for creative, yet simple solutions, to quickly provide tangible results to complex problems.
